Fun Fact: European settlers walked through present-day Flagler County as early as 1565, when Spanish Admiral Pedro Menendez, fresh off of founding the nearby city of St. Augustine, searched the coast for shipwrecked French sailors. Fun Fact: Centuries before the Spanish and British set foot on the Halifax peninsula, Native Americans occupied and established a thriving community there. The Timucua (teh-moo-kwa) Indians and several other tribes occupied Florida when the Spanish arrived in the 1500s. 

Fun Fact: The earliest known inhabitants of the Ormond-by-the-Sea area were the Timucuan Indians, who in the sixteenth century occupied a large village called Nocoroco, located at the site of Tomoka State Park.

Fun Fact: Situated between Daytona Beach to the south and Ormond Beach to the north along the Halifax River, Holly Hill has a classic Florida origin story, incorporating in 1901 as an attempt to combat unpenned razorback hogs from raiding the gardens of unamused residents.

Fun Fact: South Daytona, bordered by the Halifax River, was once a town called Blake.  The land was particularly suited to orange cultivation and vegetable gardening, and many of the early settlers profitably engaged in those endeavors.

Fun Fact: Early automotive pioneers such as Louis Chevrolet and Henry Ford enjoyed their leisure time in the sun and found that the hard-packed sand, gentle slope and wide expanse of Volusia's beach was the perfect proving ground for early auto racing.
